Zōni is a Japanese soup dish that contains mochi, glutinous rice cakes. Traditionally, it is served during the Japanese New Year, which is also from December 31st to January 1st. Zōni is one of the components of osechi-ryōri, a collection of elaborately prepared food for the New Year. Each food prepared as osechi-ryōri typically carries a symbolic meaning of prosperity.
